There are two basic designs for industrial air compressors currently available in the market today. These are the rotating impeller industrial air compressors and the positive displacement industrial air compressors.

While there are two major designs, their central functional mechanics are the same. Industrial air compressors utilize a conventional piston and crankshaft system that powers a rod and its attached piston through a cylinder released through a valve head.  In this basic design, the crankshaft is operated by an electric or gas powered motor to impel the air through the mechanical system. The air produced is either fed through a hose to the outside environment or stored in an airtight gas chamber for future use.

What differentiates the rotating impeller from the positive displacement industrial air compressors design is the manner where air is forced through the system. A rotating impeller uses fins or propellers to force the air into the valve head. On the other hand, a positive displacement uses a piston to force the air through a tight cylinder compressing it before being released through the outlet.

What then is the more efficient design for industrial air compressors? Many say the design function with fewer moving parts would be more efficient. In this case, the positive displacement industrial air compressors would be considered as more efficient. Their downside is that pressure produced in the crankshaft cylinder would require greater care and maintenance. On the other hand, the rotating impeller would have more moving parts but the lesser risk in the operation, thus lesser need for care and maintenance, can lead to the argument that it is more efficient.

As can be seen, the basics of industrial air compressors involve its mechanics in operation. Air is forced to be compressed through motorized means. How this is done and the maintenance required to keep it running is a decision best left for the needs of the manufacturing concern.
