“Horsepower” in Quincy Air Compressors
“Horsepower” in Quincy Air Compressors

If you’ve ever gone out and looked for industrial or Quincy air compressors, you’ve probably noticed that many of them include a “horsepower” rating. This also might have struck you as being a bit strange – horsepower, after all, was a term invented specifically to describe motor vehicles, and with that frame of reference, it can be difficult to reassign its meaning to associate with Quincy. Air compressors, however, can be defined fairly largely by their HP ratings, so it’s a very good term to understand as you look for your own.

Your air compressor’s horsepower is simply a number that represents the amount of energy it needs to finish its basic function. It will give you a good idea of how much energy will be required to operate the compressor on a daily basis, at both its average and peak, or maximum, output ratings. For many, horsepower is the most important rating to know before purchasing their Quincy air compressors, and it’s easy to understand why – understanding how much energy the machine requires gives you an idea of how much it will cost to run, and also how much it will be adding to your production line.

However, contrary to a popular belief, horsepower is not an effective rating of the speed of the process, or of how much compressed air your machine can produce in a given amount of time. Before you purchase any Quincy air compressors, make sure you know the CFM requirements of your production line, and purchase a machine that exceeds the requirement by a fair amount. Use horsepower instead to give you an idea of whether your system can support the compressor – not whether or not your compressor can support your system.

If you want to learn more about horsepower, and find a Quincy-brand machine that’s right for your own production, don’t hesitate to reach out to us any time!
