Types Of Oils and Lubricants Used In Industrial Air Compressors
June 09, 2021

Oils and lubricants play a critical role in lengthening the lifespan of industrial air compressors and maintaining their long-term performance. The absence of oils and lubricants can increase friction between parts and components of a compressor, which could cause further damages. It’s important to choose the right type of oil or lubricant for a compressor to ensure its smooth functioning.

There are three types of oils and lubricants for machines that one can choose from. Each type has its pros and cons. One should take all factors into consideration along with the manufacturer’s recommendation to have a fully functional and highly efficient industrial air compressor.

A mineral base in standard lubricants and oils is cheaper than synthetic oils. However, these lubricants have a shorter lifespan and their performance doesn’t match up to their counterparts. Therefore, using standard lubricants requires maintenance teams to observe them frequently so that they can be replaced or replenished as often as needed.

Synthetic bases make up cost-efficient oils and lubrications. Due to their synthetic base, these oils and lubricants can last up to 50% longer than mineral bases. Unlike standard oils and lubrications, synthetic oils can stay cool, thus, evaporate at a slower pace.

These multi-purpose oils work with some industrial air compressors. However, it’s recommended that you consult with your machine's manufacturer or distributor before using these types of lubricants. While multi-purpose oils are often advertised as one-size-fits-all, remember that every compressor has its unique oil and lubrication needs.

How to determine the lifespan of lubricants and oils

Heat determines the actual lifespan and performance of lubricant oils. Therefore, choose a good standard or synthetic oil or lubricant with a high heat resistance that guarantees good results while taking care of your compressor’s maintenance needs.
