Applications of Nitrogen Gas Generators
Applications of Nitrogen Gas Generators
May 23, 2019

In addition to supplying industrial air compressors and parts, we offer nitrogen generators as complementary equipment for facility operations. This type of equipment allows for on-site nitrogen gas production for applications that require an unlimited and immediate supply of this gas. On-site nitrogen production is often preferred to having the gas transported to the site in cylinders, as the latter option involves a longer wait time and only provides a limited amount of nitrogen gas.

The Mechanism Behind Nitrogen Gas Generation

Nitrogen generators produce pure nitrogen gas by separating nitrogen from oxygen and other gas molecules, allowing only nitrogen molecules to reach the generator’s receiver. Pure nitrogen gas is useful for industrial applications that involve the removal of oxygen or strengthening of materials.

There are two types of nitrogen gas generators to choose from, based on your needs: the PSA (Pressure Swing Absorption) nitrogen generator and the membrane nitrogen generator. Both of these systems make use of compressed air to produce nitrogen. Here is a breakdown of these two types of nitrogen gas generators.

PSA Nitrogen Generator

Typically, this type of generator consists of two vessels equipped with carbon molecular sieves that are used to absorb oxygen. While one vessel absorbs oxygen under high pressure, the second vessel depressurizes to allow nitrogen to flow into a storage unit. The benefits of using a PSA nitrogen generator are higher gas purity, between 95% to 99.9995%, and consistently high performance levels.

Membrane Nitrogen Generator

The membrane nitrogen generator filters heavier, slower-moving nitrogen gas molecules out of compressed air using porous, semi-permeable fibers. Other gases, such as carbon dioxide, oxygen and hydrogen, are able to pass through these fibers and exit the system. These generators are able to achieve a similar, although slightly lower, level of gas purity: from 95% to 99.9%. They are also more compact, quiet and efficient.

Nitrogen Gas Applications Across Industries

Much like industrial air compressors, the list of industries that make use of nitrogen generators is extensive, including everything from food packaging to aerospace. Here is a short sample of these industries.

  • Food packaging
  • Chemical plants
  • Electronics
  • Pollution control
  • Mining
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Oil and gas
  • Military
  • Aerospace

While we specialize in supplying industrial air compressors and vacuum systems, we have also established partnerships with reputable manufacturers of nitrogen gas generators, such as Peak i-Flow, Parker and Nano, to provide our customers with high-quality nitrogen gas production equipment.

At Air Energy Group, we supply a wide range of industrial air compressors and vacuum systems from trusted manufacturers, including Powerex, Kobelco and Quincy. We aim to be your one-stop shop for all things industrial air compressor—as such, we offer compressor parts, rentals and services that encompass installation, repairs, maintenance and energy efficiency analyses. Contact us today for all of your air compressor needs!
